JOB SUMMARY: The Experiment Support Scientist (ESS) works with Principal Investigators to define science requirements for human research experiments conducted in flight and/or flight analog platforms, including the International Space Station and the Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) at JSC. The ESS is expected to oversee the implementation of experiment requirements in the flight or analog platform through the development of mission planning and integration products.  The ESS also provides real-time on-site support before and during missions as required, which may require shift work.  The ESS is also responsible for progress reports of accomplishments and reports to management.

  • Works with investigator teams to define experiment science requirements and develop planning documents, crew procedures, schedules, timelines, and presentation material)
  •  Provides mission console support as needed during mission operations, including shifts outside of normal business hours.
  •  Trains crew members on experiment activities and procedures 
  • Conducts inventories, assists with stowage and manifests, may conduct or assist with Baseline Data Collection (BDC). 
  •  Coordinates and supports meetings as required to assure mission readiness.
  • Other mission related duties/tasks as assigned.       
  • Ground Analog experience is preferred.
  • Experience is preferred in documentation, procedures and requirements development within NASA programs. 
  • Knowledge of NASA’s policies and procedures for life science research is preferred. 
  • Knowledge of human research design is highly desirable.

  • Training or experience with Virtual Reality, wearable technologies, flight simulators, MS Project, database programs
  • Intermediate computer skills are required (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Project). 
  • Demonstrated skill in working both independently and as part of a team and coordination of scientific and technical requirements are necessary.
